New global warming evidance found

New evidence from ice buried deep in Antarctica shows that today’s greenhouse gas levels are higher than anything the Earth has seen in 650,000 years. A team of scientists collected ice cores from a depth of two miles in a remote area of Antarctica, allowing them a glimpse far back in time.

They found that levels of carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide – three gases that trap heat in our atmosphere – have been rising, since the industrial age began, to levels unmatched anywhere in the ice record that now goes back 650,000 years.

James White, a geologist and climate change expert at the University of Colorado, told the New York Times that the findings, published in the journal Science, mean we are likely in for significant global warming. “CO2 and climate are like two people handcuffed to each other,” he said. “Where one goes, the other must follow … Our current CO2 levels appear to be far out of balance with climate when viewed through these results, reinforcing the idea that we have significant modern warming to go.”

Asus launches second-gen Eee PC

Eee PC 900Asus has officially unveiled the Eee PC 900, the larger 8.9-inch version of its popular low-cost notebook. This new version bumps the screen resolution up to 1024 x 600, which is certainly more enjoyable than the 800 x 480 of the older model, and features a 1.3MP webcam.

Spec-wise, onboard memory has been doubled to 1GB of RAM, while storage was also significantly increased to a choice of 12GB (Windows version) or 20GB (Linux version) of solid-state storage, depending on which operating system you opt for. Asus doesn’t mention the processor for the portable, though previous reports have confirmed it will use the same Celeron M as its predecessor until Intel launches its faster, cooler Atom architecture in June.

The new Asus Eee PC 900 is supposed to land in the UK on May 1 and sell for £329 in a Windows XP and Linux configuration. Unfortunately, no US launch dates have been released as of yet.

Caffeine May Block High Cholesterol Linked to Alzheimer's

A little caffeine every day could offer some protection from Alzheimer's disease for people with high cholesterol.

Rabbits given the daily caffeine equivalent of one cup of coffee and fed a cholesterol-rich diet for 12 weeks suffered relatively little damage in their blood-brain barrier (BBB), which protects the central nervous system from the rest of the body's circulation, new research found.

The findings were published in the open-access publication Journal of Neuroinflammation.

Previous studies have shown that high levels of cholesterol break down the BBB, exposing the central nervous system to damage from blood-borne contamination. BBB leakage occurs in a variety of neurological disorders such as Alzheimer's disease.

"High levels of cholesterol are a risk factor for Alzheimer's disease, perhaps by compromising the protective nature of the blood-brain barrier. For the first time, we have shown that chronic ingestion of caffeine protects the BBB from cholesterol-induced leakage," Jonathan Geiger, of the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences, said in a prepared statement.

Caffeine appears to offer protection by helping proteins maintain the tight binding of the cells in the BBB, so they stop unwanted molecules from entering the central nervous system.

The findings also confirm previous studies showing that caffeine protects against memory loss in aging and in Alzheimer's disease.

"Caffeine is a safe and readily available drug, and its ability to stabilize the blood-brain barrier means it could have an important part to play in therapies against neurological disorders," Geiger said.

'Six-way' kidney transplant first

US doctors have carried out what is believed to be the world's first simultaneous six-way kidney transplant.

Six recipients received organs from six donors in operations at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Maryland.

The procedure was made possible after an altruistic donor - neither a friend nor relative of any of the six patients - was found to match one of them.

Five patients had a willing donor whose kidney was incompatible with theirs, but it did match another in the group.

This meant that suddenly, there were six people who could receive an organ.

The operations were carried out simultaneously to make sure no-one backed out after their loved one had received a kidney.

"All 12 are doing great, the six kidneys are working well," said Dr Robert Montgomery, director of the transplant centre at the Johns Hopkins hospital.

Team effort

The hospital has been one of the pioneers of this system which matches up several groups of people at one time.

It aims to circumvent the problem of altruistic donors ending up in arbitrary allocation systems where only a single patient's needs are served.

The hospital has been carrying out these simultaneous transplants for three years: in 2005, the first triple procedure was performed, a year later, the first five-way.

Nearly 100 medical professionals were needed to make the complex series of transplants possible, from immunogeneticists to hinder rejection to psychologists.

If all goes to plan, each patient can expect their new kidney to last for as long as 20 years.

Recipient Jeanne Heise, whose husband donated to another patient, said more people should know about the system.

"The waiting list for a kidney is very long and too many people die while waiting," she said. "With this group procedure, more and more people can beat kidney disease and live long productive lives."

The UK has so far carried out only two-way transplants, with the most recent - the third - just this week. The prospect of three-way transplants is currently being examined.

A spokesman for UK transplant welcomed the news that the US had achieved a six-way procedure, but said the organisation and logistics required for such a process meant it was still a "very long way off" for the UK.

Telstra F852

Close your eyes, we want you to imagine a phone. Actually, keep them open, you need to read on. Now imagine a Next G flip phone released by Telstra a few months back called the EasyTouch.

If you're familiar with the Telstra EasyTouch then you are, in fact, also familiar with the F852. Beyond a change to the colour scheme -- from silver to black -- and the addition of three external music control buttons to the F852, these phones are almost identical. If you compare the physical dimensions for both phones you'll notice that each of these measurements differs by a single millimetre.

Under the F852's flip we find exactly the same components found in the EasyTouch; the same two-inch QVGA TFT colour display and the same recessed plastic keypad. Below the screen is a 0.3-megapixel camera for video-calling, with a 2-megapixel camera on the outside for standard pics.

The recessed keypad lays flat against the bottom half of the handset, with thin raised plastic strips to differentiate the location of the various buttons. The keypad is well spaced and easy to use, but the plastic components help to give the entire handset a cheap, toy-like feel.

To get more review about Telstra F852 performance, features and specifications, you can read here!

4 Must-Have Beauty Supplements

Are you taking an inside-out approach to beauty? You know that nourishing your mind, body, and spirit enhances your natural glow; what's surprising is that scientists now say it's worth adding supplements to your diet, exercise, and skin routine.

"It's important to also feed the skin internally," says Leslie Baumann, MD, director of cosmetic dermatology at the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami. "In addition to eating a healthy diet, certain supplements can provide a constant supply of essential nutrients." Here's the latest on which pills have been scientifically proven to help deliver firmer, more radiant skin and healthier nails.

For Strong, Pretty Nails
BIOTIN

Age-weakened nails may have met their match in this B vitamin. Several studies, including one published by dermatologist Richard K. Scher, MD, a professor of clinical dermatology at Columbia University, show that daily supplementation with 2.5 mg of biotin significantly improves nail strength—translating into firmer, harder nails that are less likely to crack or chip. (Another possible benefit that hasn't been studied: thicker hair, which a number of people have reported.) Experts don't know why megadoses of biotin help fortify fragile nails—the idea originated with veterinarians, who give it to horses to harden their hooves.

Although getting nutrients from your diet is most desirable, you'll probably need a supplement to notice a difference in your nails: Eggs and liver, two rich dietary sources, deliver a scant 25 and 27 mcg (or 100 times less than the studied amount), and many multis provide just 30 mcg.

Your Rx: Look for a supplement such as Appearex ($25 for a 12-week supply; appearex.com) that contains 2.5 mg of biotin. Because the vitamin is water-soluble, it won't build up in the body and cause side effects. To be safe, Scher recommends checking with your physician before taking biotin and discontinuing use if you haven't seen any improvement at all after 3 months.

To Help Prevent Aging
HELIOCARE
Nothing wears out skin like UV exposure, which is why applying sunscreen is the most important thing you can do to safeguard it. But bolstering skin's UV defenses with Heliocare—a potent antioxidant that mops up free radicals produced by the sun—is a good second step. Derived from a South American fern, the supplement has a huge dermatologist fan base: One loyal user, New Orleans dermatologist Mary Lupo, MD, a Prevention advisor, calls it "a slam dunk." "I'm positive it helps," she says. "On a recent trip to CancĂșn, my husband and I both used sunscreen and took Heliocare one day, and neither of us burned. The following day, we both used sunscreen, but only I took Heliocare—and he burned."

There's strong scientific support for the supplement's skin-protecting ability: It dramatically reduced the incidence of sunburn as well as damage to collagen and elastin, the fibers that keep skin smooth and firm, in two published Harvard Medical School studies. That's because Heliocare is particularly effective against the "aging" UVA rays that most sunscreens don't protect against completely.

Your Rx: Lupo recommends taking one capsule 30 minutes prior to sun exposure if you're prone to sunburn. If you plan to spend an extended period of time in the sun, take another capsule 3 hours from the first ($60 for 60 capsules; heliocare.com).

For Soft, Smooth Skin
OMEGA-3 FATTY ACIDS
These supplements aren't just making headlines for preventing heart disease—dermatologists are recommending them to help heal dry skin and the rough, red, scaly patches of psoriasis and eczema. "Countless studies show that increasing the consumption of omega-3 oils improves these conditions," says Baumann. In one study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, volunteers with severe dermatitis taking high levels of omega-3s (6 g) saw a 30% decrease in symptoms. Psoriasis sufferers experienced similar results in other research.

It's easy to see why omega-3s are crucial to skin health: Besides being an integral part of the membranes that surround our skin cells, these essential fats—which must be obtained from diet or supplements because our bodies cannot make them—are a key component of the lubricating layer that keeps skin supple. They also aid in the production of hormones that improve skin texture and help combat the inflammatory damage wrought by free radicals—one of the causes of wrinkles and blotchiness. This is likely why sun-sensitive people may be significantly less prone to burning after omega-3 supplementation, according to one study.

Your Rx: Eating fish such as salmon, mackerel, and albacore tuna—good sources of omega-3s—twice a week and taking supplements are easy ways to increase your intake. For better skin, Baumann recommends taking 1,000 mg of omega-3 oils a day—about the same dosage recommended to keep your ticker in good shape. Try Nordic Naturals Omega-3 Purified Fish Oil ($27 for 120 soft gels; nordicnaturals.com) or Kirkland Signature Fish Oil ($9 for 400 soft gels; costco.com).

To Boost Firmness and Hydration
IMEDEEN PRIME RENEWAL
The idea that a biomarine-based complex can shore up aging skin may sound a little fishy, but the evidence is impressive, says Baumann. Postmenopausal women taking the supplement (which is recommended for those age 50 and up) saw significant improvement in skin firmness and smoothness in a 6-month study in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition—and the results were seen on the face, dĂ©colletage, and hands. Likewise, in a similar 12-week study on women taking a sister supplement (Imedeen Time Perfection, suggested for women 35 to 50), skin's moisture content increased by 30%. Other changes include a visible reduction in fine lines, a fading of sunspots, and an overall brighter complexion.

The contents of the capsules—which contain a proprietary protein derived from a deep-sea fish and high concentrations of antioxidants such as vitamin C and lycopene—work in part by increasing production of collagen and elastin, as well as hyaluronic acid, the body's natural moisturizer, says Imedeen's Lars Lindmark, PhD.

Your Rx: Take the Imedeen supplement suggested for your age, advises Baumann, who uses Time Perfection herself and recommends it to patients. Although a 90-day supply of Prime Renewal ($245) is significantly more expensive than Time Perfection ($180; both at imedeen.us), it supplies twice the amount of the biomarine complex.

Writing 'eases stress of cancer'

writingEncouraging cancer patients to write down their deepest fears about the disease may improve their quality of life, according to a US study.

Nancy Morgan, a "writing clinician", approached patients waiting in a clinic at a cancer centre in Washington DC.

Half those who took part said the exercise changed the way they thought about the illness, according to the journal The Oncologist.

Younger people, and those recently diagnosed, were most likely to benefit.

Ms Morgan developed her role as part of the Arts and Humanities Program at the Lombardi Center.

Her "expressive writing" exercise, lasting just 20 minutes, posed questions to leukaemia or lymphoma patients about how the cancer had changed them and how they felt about those changes.

When those taking part were contacted again a few weeks later, 49% said that the writing had changed their thoughts about their illness, while 38% said their feelings towards their situation had changed.

While there was no evidence of direct impact of the session on their illness, where the patients had reported greater changes in their mindset during the writing, this could be linked to more positive reports of quality of life given to their doctors during follow-up appointments.

Ms Morgan said: "Thoughts and feelings, or the cognitive processing and emotions related to cancer, are key writing elements associated with health benefits, according to previous studies.

"Writing only about the facts has shown no benefit."

Dr Bruce Cheson, the head of haematology at Lombardi, said: "I'm pleased to see that so many of our patients were interested in this kind of therapy.

"Our study supports the benefit of an expressive writing program and the ability to integrate such a program into a busy clinic."

Living with Autism

autismBy Carin Gorrell

One in 150 children will be diagnosed with this devastating disorder that locks them away in their own mind. Learn how you can help them.

From the moment our children are born, we worry. We lose sleep over how to keep them healthy and happy, whether they'll find true love, where they'll go to college (and how in the world we'll pay for it). But we don't tend to sweat the "givens," like whether our kids will attend kindergarten, say the words "I love you" — or even speak. Yet for more and more parents, those milestones aren't givens at all. And autism — a developmental disorder characterized by difficulty with language, emotions, and basic problem-solving — is the mysterious force that's taking them away.

Originally identified in 1943, autism used to be considered a rare disorder, but scientists are now warning of a rapid rise in its incidence: In 1994, one in 10,000 children were diagnosed; today, new findings from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention put the prevalence at one in 150 children — that's more than childhood cancer, diabetes, and AIDS combined. What's behind the huge jump? Some suspect that new vaccines, vaccine additives, and other environmental factors are to blame. Others say the increase can largely be attributed to improved diagnostic measures.

But most experts admit they simply don't know what's triggering the spike — or even what causes autism in the first place.

"Autism is a very complex disorder likely involving both environmental and genetic influences. But money for research hasn't been available until the last 10 or so years, so we simply don't know much about its biology," explains Andy Shih, Ph.D., chief science officer for Autism Speaks, a not-for-profit autism advocacy organization. Historically, autism has received less than 5 percent of U.S. federal funding devoted to childhood diseases. This lack of resources and information has prevented any one scientific discipline (whether psychology, psychiatry, neurology, or pediatrics) from claiming the condition as its own — and accepting the responsibility for finding a cause and a cure.

Fortunately, the tides are finally turning, thanks in part to the Combating Autism Act. Passed by Congress and signed by President George W. Bush in December 2006, this legislation authorizes $924 million in federal funds to be spent on research related to autism screening, prevention, and treatment over the next five years. Though that's small potatoes compared to the $2.9 billion spent annually on HIV/AIDS research, it's enough to lay the groundwork for the future research that could eventually bring an end to autism.

In the meantime, parents of boys and girls with autism must continue their struggle to raise children who require constant attention, surveillance, and treatment — a struggle that can leave even the most energetic and optimistic parents drained, depressed, and despairing.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

  • Get walking: Each year, Autism Speaks (AS), a not-for-profit autism advocacy organization, hosts more than 60 fund-raising walks across the country. To register for a walk in your area, go to walknowforautism.org.

  • Push for appropriations: The signing of the Combating Autism Act (CAA), which authorizes $924 million in federal funding to be spent on autism research over the next five years, is just step one in the process. Implementing the CAA requires that Congress appropriate funds to research agencies. To help speed these appropriations, ask your congressmen to support funding for the CAA. You can do so easily through the AS Website (go to autismspeaks.org to fill out a form letter; click on "To Get Involved," then "Support Legislation," then "Show Support").

  • Call for insurance coverage: Autistic children need 30 to 40 hours a week of physical, speech, and/or occupational therapy, which can cost upward of $70,000 a year. Currently, only 17 states have legislation requiring at least some insurance coverage for treatment, which means most families must pay out of pocket. To find out if your state provides insurance coverage, or to learn how to send a call to action to your governor or state legislator, log on to autismspeaks.org.

  • Show your support: Don an AS lapel pin ($10) or baseball cap ($15), or attach an AS car magnet to your bumper ($5); all are available at autismspeaks.org, and all net proceeds benefit AS. Buy one of the following at quixtar.com, and Artistry will donate $1 to Easter Seals programs for kids with autism: Artistry Essential Hand Treatment with SPF 15 ($27.25) or Artistry Perfect Moisture Lip Compact ($34.40 for a two-pack). Or buy an Artistry Beauty Begins With Heart sterling silver cuff bracelet ($55) or an Artistry Beauty Begins With Heart T-shirt ($19.99), and Artistry will donate 100 percent of proceeds to Easter Seals autism programs.

  • Buy this book: Strange Son, written by Portia Iversen, is a memoir of two mothers who learn to teach their autistic sons to communicate. Available for $19.96; 8 percent of proceeds go to AS.

The adapted essays of mothers with autistic children that appeared in the May 2007 issue of REDBOOK can be found in the book The Elephant in the Playroom.

5 Answers: What's Your Biggest Weakness?

Everything is going well. You arrived on time, you're making excellent eye contact and you're acing every question that's being thrown at you. You've got this job in the bag, until you hear the interviewer utter, “What’s your biggest weakness?” You know you shouldn't answer too quickly, so you take your time and then suddenly realize you're not sure how to answer. You may be tempted to blurt out, “I have no weaknesses,” and hope to illustrate your confidence in your abilities, but we all know (and your soon-to-be boss will too) that's a lie. Since you can't opt for a pass as you would in a game show, here are five strong techniques to answer the popular interview question, "What's your biggest weakness?"

"I tend to talk too much."
Certainly, this answer is not to give the impression that you prefer to spend half of your day in idle chitchat with your coworkers. Illustrate how, in a world of e-mailing, being able to effectively communicate in person is a huge plus. Additionally, this can flow over into being able to get on the phone and talk with prospective partners or clients -- a skill that employees lack more and more in business today. In group activities, note how your verbal communication skills allow you to quickly convey the message and encourage discussion. In some cases, you may be classified as being too talkative and state that you are aware of that, but this approach gives you confidence that the message is being delivered appropriately. Of course, use this answer in the correct setting. For example, it likely applies more to a communications or sales position than to a number-crunching job.

"I project self-expectations."
This response should communicate that you expect high levels of performance from yourself and those around you. Certainly, you need to communicate that you recognize that each person is different with different skills and levels of ability and that you are not here to make clones of yourself. Specifically, note that you aim to bring the best out of everyone and expect each person on the team to contribute per their responsibilities to make for a successful business effort.

"I get attached to projects."
Typically, being too attached to a project can drive your coworkers crazy and it's never fun to have to be the one to point out the seemingly microscopic details. Certainly the attention to detail might detract more from volume of projects, but sometimes it's getting the last 5% of the job done that makes chances for success skyrocket. When using this response, focus more on how you take a vested interest in having the task done right, rather than just going through the motions. If you are simply a perfectionist, that can have some problems on its own, so be clear that this weakness might actually help you fit in nicely in a fast-paced environment where an extra set of eyeballs is absolutely needed. After all, the best results are usually in the details and every employer can appreciate delivering a project that is free of mistake.

Don't let the "what's your biggest weakness?" question stump you..

"I assume the leader role when it's not designated to me."
Leadership is most frequently referenced as a good quality, but in the workplace it can often drive your coworkers crazy. We all remember team projects in college; there was always that one person (maybe it was you) running the show, organizing the troops and moving things forward. This same scenario is often replicated in the workplace. Use this answer to communicate your interest in taking on responsibility within the company and illustrating your desire to get the job done. You should also comment that, despite your energetic attitude to push the ball over the goal line, you are sensitive to your coworkers and never intend to come off as a tyrant.

"I'm a workaholic."

When using this answer, be careful not to put too high expectations on yourself. You don't want to give the impression that all you do is put in a bunch of time at the office. Note that your workaholic nature is more akin to always thinking in terms of the business and to keeping your mind open to related business issues, even on the weekend. For example, rather than saying you come in every Saturday and Sunday, allude to how you may take note of an idea during a leisurely web-surfing session on a weekend morning. The purpose of this answer is not to show you are a one-dimensional office dweller, but that you take your job seriously and recognize that it takes more than just putting in your nine-to-five time to drive success and results.

the right questions and answers
The "What is your biggest weakness?" question is a stock question in the interview processes. Generally speaking, when noting a weakness it should be a small, nominal item and relevant to the workplace. Certainly, be honest, as it could come back to you later in your career. For example, if you note being too talkative as your weakness, but hardly say a word once you have landed the job or during the interview, it could impact your credibility. Most importantly, when you're provided the opportunity to answer this question, be confident and try to make a professional, memorable impression to set yourself apart from the other candidates, because that's really what it's all about.
