The World's First Bendable Cell Phone

Demonstrations of 'bendable' screens have been a staple of technology shows ever since there were screens small enough for us to carry. This week, Samsung has given the strongest sign yet that the hi-tech devices might become reality.

The company demonstrated 'bendable' AMOLED screens 4.5 inches across and just 0.3mm thick in January this year. Reports this week hint that phones using the technology - which can be 'rolled up' and survive hammer blows - will appear in the second quarter of next year.

The technology relies on atom-thick layers of 'graphene' - sheets of carbon atoms - sandwiched together, protecting a layer of liquid crystal 'screen'.

Earlier this year, reports leaked that Samsung had the capacity to manufacture large amounts of the screen by 'early 2012' - but no one knew what they might be for.

Samsung later released pictures of a concept phone using the technology - the Galaxy Skin.The phone would be no mere novelty.

Phones using Graphene screens would be practically unbreakable, and offer an instant advantage over every other smartphone on the market. Now, according to reports in the International Business Times, the handsets could be on sale early next year.

The report was remarkably specific, stating that the handset would offer specifications including a high-resolution 800×480 flexible AMOLED screen, eight megapixel camera and 1Gb of RAM as well as a 1.2GHz processor.

Diamond Contact Lenses Cost You $15,000

We've heard of colored contact lenses, cat eye contacts, and even Lady Gaga's circle contacts that enlarge your irises, but what about diamond contacts? They may sound like a hoax, but the Today Show blog, Wired, and Gizmodo are reporting on gold-plated, diamond-encrusted lenses from Shekhar Eye Research Center in India. Forget bling on your finger, now you can have eyes that literally light up a room for a whopping $15,000.

Creator Dr. Chandrashekhar Chawan told Today he got the idea for diamond contact lenses after his wife had the precious stones implanted in her teeth. His new La Ser eye jewelry line features contacts with 18 diamonds adorning a yellow or white gold ring around the lenses. He uses Boston Scleral lenses, which are typically used to treat eye illnesses, to prevent the lenses from touching the cornea. Only 3,996 sets will be made, and Chawan hopes to sell them outside of India. Experts, however, are skeptical about their safety.

Sal Riggio, a licensed optician at Manhattan Grand Optical in New York City had never heard of the diamond contacts until we brought them to his attention, but he dismissed them when he learned they were not FDA approved.

The 5 Series' cabin tech package checks all of the right boxes, but only if you make sure to check the those boxes when making your purchase, as nearly all of the Beemer's gee-whiz gadgets are optional.

Starting at the top of the center console, the BMW's wide-screen hard-drive-based navigation system features 3D terrain data and satellite imagery when zoomed far enough out and, in major metropolitan areas, 3D building data when zoomed far enough in. The wide screen allows users to split the screen to display secondary data (audio source, trip computers, and turn-by-turn directions) alongside the map, or fill the entire screen with the beautifully rendered maps. The navigation system also features traffic data.

Bluetooth connectivity with BMW Assist is standard on the 535i. BMW Assist is the automaker's connected-telematics system that integrates GPS positioning, cellular connectivity, and something of a concierge service to give you access to a live operator who will assist the driver with locating destinations (and cueing up the vehicle's turn-by-turn directions) or alerting first responder services in the event of an emergency.

The system also enables hands-free calling with voice activated dialing and supports Bluetooth PBAP, allowing it to automatically import contacts from a paired handset that also supports this profile. A2DP audio streaming is not supported, so smartphone users wanting to get their Internet streaming-radio fix will need to use the BMW's analog auxiliary input.

Prada's sleek handset is back, this time around sporting a slide-out keyboard and a really cool sidekick. Engadget says LG has officially launched a microsite to promote the upcoming launch of the sexy Prada II, which also gives us a peek at the matching Prada Link Bluetooth watch.

The phone itself supports a 5-megapixel camera with a Schneider-Kreuznach certified lens, a multi-touch display (similar to the iPhone), 3G connectivity, a front-mounted secondary camera for video calling, Wi-Fi accessibility, FM radio, microSD card slot, DiVX playback, and many more features.

The Prada II's partner in crime, the Prada Link Bluetooth watch, can display caller ID information, call history, and text messages without having to remove the phone from your purse or pocket. Also, the Link alerts you with a ring or vibration when you have an incoming call, and it doubles as a stopwatch and alarm clock.

The LG Blog says the phone will be available through major dealerships in Italy, UK, France, Germany, Spain and Netherlands before Christmas for a retail price of 600 Euros ($760). No word on whether it will be available in the U.S. anytime soon, but I'm sure you'll be able to find it through importers shortly after its release.

We've come across a wide array of headphones. But in all our sound journeys as audiophiles, never have we come across a pair of earphones that is more 'pimped out' than this one. The device is made from 18 carat gold, encrusted with 118 of the highest quality diamonds and the sound you get is stunning. The 59 diamonds gracing the earphone are individually set in gold. World's Brightest LCD Panel Unveiled by Samsung

The most important factors in any display solution designed especially for digital signage applications are its size and its brightness, ensuring the fact that the images will be clearly visible even in bright sunshine. However, none of the models currently available on the market will be able to compete against Samsung's latest development, a 70-inch panel touted by its manufacturer to be the world's brightest, with a light output of 2000 nits.

According to the company's statement, this digital information display (DID) is one-third brighter than the previous model and has been designed to optimally accommodate the wide range of lighting conditions affecting outdoor displays. Besides providing around 4 times the brightness of most consumer-grade HDTVs, the device also sports a brightness-control option, which actually allows operators to "dim it down" during nighttime.

Moreover, by using local dimming LED technology, the DID LCD panel manages to keep power consumption as low as possible by adjusting picture brightness in very precise "localized" increments, thereby avoiding having to brighten areas that don’t require it.

One of the main advantages provided by this local dimming technology is related to the contrast ratio, which achieves a very impressive value, of 200,000:1. Other features worth mentioning are the Full-HD (1080p) screen resolution with 16.7 million colors, plus some very good viewing angles, namely 178 degrees on both horizontal and vertical directions.

The panel weighs 80 kilograms, is 1630mm (millimeters) wide by 952mm high by 129.6mm deep, and can be used in either portrait or landscape format, thus making it pretty versatile. Unfortunately, no pricing details have been provided, but Samsung claims that the first samples of this "super-bright" display will be available by the year's end, with mass production most likely scheduled to start at some point in early 2009.
